Oil and gas are the two important natural energy resources of Iran, which have deeply affected Iranian contemporary history and life. So this fact had to be taken in to account during the design process of the project. Another important factor, which had also to be considered in the project, was the sun.
The building must not only be functionally responsive but also has to represent both the true character of its subject (in this case oil industry building) and also the characteristics of its site. The building mass is driven towards the east side of the land and has diagonally divided it to enclosed and open sectors. This configuration in combination with the hill situated in the west side of the land generates an artificial valley that can be a metaphor of the morphological situation of the site.
The open sector o f the site is filled with a horizontal volume, which is lower than natural ground and is extended towards the building mass in the east. The external manifestation of this part is a vast furbish surface - built of black granite and covered with a shallow layer of water- that symbolically represents an oil sea. The most important spatial sector of the complex is a huge vertical glass surface, which is comprised by plenty of fragmented surfaces and is situated on the west part of the complex. The glass wall symbolically represents sun and is technically designed to absorb the maximum rate of solar energy. It also acts as a vast mirror in front of the western hill.
