Export Development Bank of Iran
Tehran-Iran 1997

The main concept of this project benefits from application of a kind of pure formal expression and concentrates on the spatial potentials of a fluid, dynamic internal space protected by a thick (outer) skin. We tried to symbolically represent the role of the banks as treasury and its historical role on safe guarding the wealth by creating an opaque cubic building. In other words this pure formal expression makes the bank to seem similar to a treasure house, firmly settled on the ground with its purity inspiring the safety expected from a bank – a modern treasure house.

The symbolic and dramatic opening of one of the surfaces of the building which was designed both to affect the fluid flow of people in and also to admit light to the dynamic interior space, is actually a kind of phenomenological effort which aims at unifying the character of modern bank with its historical image as a safe vault.
The decorative glamorous quality of the entrance slit enhances the legerity and transparency of the volume. The dynamic interior space of the building, induced by the opening of the skin of the volume is the central core of the project. The administrative and official spaces surround this core. This central zone is the environment in which the main social and identifying activities of the bank are performed and which provides access to different sections of the bank.

This project was the first prizewinner in an architectural competition held in 1997.The implementation process of the project is already commenced.
