Revitalization of Karimkhan Historic Complex in Shiraz
Shiraz-Iran 1994

In the revitalization plan of the historic fabric of Shiraz, The revival of Karimkhan Complex, as the heart of the historic region, is of special importance. This complex constituted the governmental center of Zandie’ in the city of Shiraz and comprises Arg_e_Karimkhan, Bagh_e_Nazar, mosque and Bazar-e-Vakil, Divankhaneh and some other buildings of the early years of this century.

The Karimkhan complex is a grandiose symbol of the Zandie’ époque and it’s revitalization through transformation of reminiscent spaces and buildings of the past into up to date active centers, enables the connection between old Shiraz and Shiraz of today and the future, and enhances the tourist, cultural and service potentials of this city.

The design focuses on enhancing the historic atmosphere and on the revitalization of the city’s main square in Zandie’ époque (Toopkhane’ square). Therefore the automobile traffic is led under the ground level so as to achieve an uninterrupted urban landscape enclosing different elements around the square and to reconnect different fragments of Bazare-e-Vakil.
In the planning and design of Karimkhan complex we have aimed at generating a unique cultural-recreational complex that can respond to the requirements of Shiraz of the future.
