Zarand-e-no New Town
Zarand,E, Nou-Iran1976

This new town is predicted to settle the Charcoal miners of a charcoal field in Kerman. The site is adjacent to the old city of Zarand. The predicted population of the town is 56000 people.
The old city of Zarand is situated in a plain. The Zarand-Kerman railroad passes the upper (northern) part of the city. A coal-washing factory is located next to this railroad .A roadway passing by the factory, connects it to the mines at its vicinity.
Our studies reveal these facts about the project:

1). The agricultural plots of land surrounding the old city restrict its further development
2). As the available lands in the plain are under the desert’s wind, this area is not suitable for settlement of the new town, the lands located at the foot of the northern mountain seem to be more suitable.
3). The new town must have access to the mines via its roadways.
4). Since most of the new town’ s Inhabitants would be charcoal miners who work in the neighboring factories, the town must be provided with access to the factories.
5). In order to utilize the old city ‘s facilities during the implementation process of the new town, it is necessary to provide access between them.

Based on these considerations, the new town has to be placed next to the factory and the minefield‘s roadway.
The New Town’s Urban Design Process:
One of the roadways of the old town is extended towards the new town; this roadway constitutes the main axis of the new town and connects the two cities. The factors that have influenced the form of the roadway are as follows:

-Since the residential units are settled along the north-south axis, the roadway also must be in accordance to this axis.
-In order to benefit from the natural advantages and the best possible views, the road must be extended towards the elevated lands.
-It must be properly connected to the factories roadway.
-Considering the existing natural conditions, (water deficiency and desert winds), the roadway must form a closed city.
-The city axis must conform to the natural axis of land.
The form of the city’s central axis was designed according to the mentioned factors. The comprising elements of the city were organized around this axis that plays the role of Bazar in traditional cities, the city’s central district is situated on the highest part of this axis. The residential districts are placed on both sides of this artery.

A green area is predicted between the city and the factories to prevent the possible environmental pollutions (smoke, charcoal sand and etc)
The main road predicted between the central district and the factories not only provides access to the factory but also can be used as a waterline. The factory’s required water is supplied by a water-reservoir in the central district of the city .In parts The flow of water can be seen along the roadway which engenders natural beauty along this axis.

A power station is situated adjacent to the charcoal-washing factory; some other small industrial centers are predicted around this urban infrastructure so as to add to the vivacity of the whole compound.

The future development of the town might be organized within the elevated zones.
