Ziraab Residential Complex
Zirab-Iran 1970
The site chosen for the residence of the Ziraab charcoal miners is an elevated parcel of land adjacent to the mines, facing a mountain to the south and two rivers to the north and west. The road connecting the main road between Ziraab and firooz-kooh to the mines and then to Alasht crosses the site and divides it in to two parts. The temporary facilities are housed in the triangle shaped part, which lies in slope with one elevated side. In the future this plot will house the public, cultural and recreational facilities of the complex.

The houses are concentrated around a central compound on the flat lands of the northern valley and establish the first impression of the whole setting when viewed from the main road. The residential zone occupies the lands around the central compound and stretches towards the mountain up to the permitted level.
A belt road branching from Ziraab-Alasht road encircles the houses. A secondary access penetrates from this road in to the public parking, which ensures pedestrian safety along the belt road.

In accordance to native and traditional settlement typology of this region, residential units are designed as separate freestanding cells, gathered in groups of 4-7 units around the public spaces. These public spaces are interconnected and connect to the central compound via main pedestrian accesses. At the same time these routs connect the northern and southern parts of the belt road. The houses are settled in a way so as not to block the view and each house is provided with maximum view of the site.
